Richard H. Abernathy, 77, of Eau Claire died Monday, February 13, 2006 at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
 
He was born February 2, 1929 in Smith Center, Kansas to Opal (Bolin) and Cecil Abernathy. They later moved to Vinton, Iowa, where Richard graduated from Vinton High School in 1948.
 
Richard owned and operated several grocery stores and hardware stores in Iowa and Wisconsin, most recently he owned TCBY in Eau Claire for ten years. During his retirement, he worked part time at Menards West. He was a member Masonic Lodge #112.

 
He married Donna Walter of Vinton, Iowa on November 21, 1948 and they resided in Vinton, Cedar Rapids, Marshalltown and Hampton, IA and Ellsworth, WI. She preceded him in death.
 
He married Irene Humburg of Hampton, Iowa on August 2, 1980 and they lived in Ellsworth, WI, Waverly, IA and Eau Claire.
 
Survivors include his wife, Irene of Eau Claire; two sons, John Abernathy of Hudson, Mike (Gail) Abernathy of Altoona; a daughter, Diann McKibben of Lenexa, KS; step-son, David (Debbie) Humburg of Cleveland, OH; two step-daughters, Donna Abernathy of Byron, MN, Barbara (Merl) Viet of Dumont, IA; a brother, Russ (Pat) Abernathy of Milford, IA; a sister, Kathy (David) Lawrence of Streamwood, IL; 13 grandchildren, Michelle (Tim) Domke of Monroe, Laura Abernathy of White Bear Lake, MN, James Abernathy of Byron, MN, Bradley & Melissa McKibben of Kansas City, KS, Rebecca & Jessica Abernathy of Altoona, Adam (Chrissy) Humburg of Decorah, IA, Aimee Humburg of Postville, IA, Amanda Humburg of Cleveland, OH and Reece, Nick & Beth Viet of Dumont, IA.  Richard is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Libby Humburg.
 
He was preceded in death by his first wife; and his parents.
 
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, February 17, at Bethesda Lutheran Brethren Church with Rev. Paul Larson officiating. 
 
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, at Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home, where there will be Masonic rites conducted at 7 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
