Duane Charles Balts, age 79 of Eau Claire, died on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
 
Duane Charles Balts was born on February 6, 1928 to Ernest and Marlyn (Schneider) Balts in Chippewa County. His grandparents were Charles and Maggie (Lake) Balts and Charles and Irene (Buetow) Schneider. Duane started school at First Ward School on Grand Avenue, Chippewa Falls, living on Water Street. They moved to the Town of Anson, going to school at East Anson and Pine Grove Schools before moving to Cadott to Grandpa Schneider's home. He then moved to the Village of Cadott. He attended Cadott High School and worked on Grandpa Schneider's farm and at Cadott Sentinel. 

 

   After high school, he worked at O & N Lumber Company before entering the US Army. He had basic training at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, and was then shipped over seas from Fort Lauten, Washington. He was assigned to the 24th Infantry, Division 21st Regiment, Occupational Forces in Japan. 
 
On return, he worked for O & N Lumber Company and then, Falls Dairy in Jim Falls. Duane operated the evaporator and milk dryer and spent a few months at the General Motors plant in California before returning to O & N Lumber briefly in Cadott. 
 
Duane met this fabulous girl and married her in 1956-Marian Patricia Craker. They moved to Cornell and continued at O & N and then at United Building Center. He did a lot of remodeling in the Cornell area before moving to Eau Claire in 1965.
 
Duane continued construction and apartment maintenance and after retiring in 1983 he continued to install appliances and doing small construction jobs. Duane was also a trustee at Salem Baptist Church and on the Wood Lake Camp Board for 15 years. He was also a trustee and Financial Officer with Great Lake Baptist Conference for 11 years. Most recently he was a trustee with Wesleyan Church in Eau Claire for nine years.
 
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marian of Eau Claire; sons, Charles (Becky) Balts of Eau Claire; Bryan (Robin) Tainter of Eau Claire; Kevin (Mary) Balts of Eau Claire; daughter Patricia (Peter) Sweeney of Eau Claire. Mark Tew; Michael Tew; Elizabeth Tew; Scott Schoettle; Savannah Schoettle; Alicia Tainter; Daniel Tainter; Amanda Balts; Kyle Balts; Christopher Sweeney; Daniel Sweeney; Misty Sweeney; Scott Sweeney; and 9 great-grandchildren.
 
He is preceded in death by his parents and son, Leslie.
 
Services for Duane will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 22, 2007 at the Wesleyan Church with Pastor Dwayne Winterberg officiating. Friends and family may visit at the church from 9:00 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Eau Claire.
