Faye Gabrielsen Lokken was stricken with polio during the last year before the Salk vaccine became available to everyone in the United States -- in August, 1955. She was ten years old. She stayed, most of the next year, at Luther Hospital, where she had physical therapy and recovered the use of her upper body muscles, but she spent the rest of her life in a wheel chair. During her teens, she underwent several experimental surgeries at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to stabilize her spine, which was pulled into a scoliosis "S" because of lack of muscles on one side of her back. After spending many months in a body cast, she was able to "get on with" her life. However, during the last ten years of her life, Post Polio Syndrome weakened her muscles and caused her to have pain with movement, so it became more difficult for her to move at all. Through everything, Faye Lokken always had a smile on her face, met all challenges bravely, and lived life to the fullest. She was a kind and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as an inspiration to many.

At Faye Lokken's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A celebration of her life will be held at Mill Ridge Estates Condominium Community Center, which is located off Kane Road, at 4299 Mill Ridge Circle in Eau Claire, on Saturday, August 4, 2007, between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited.
