Walter Louis Gold, age 91 passed away peacefully at home on Thursday August 7, 2008.
Funeral Services to celebrate Walter's life will be at 11:00 am on Thursday August 14, 2008 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 310 Broadway Street, Eau Claire, WI. The Rev. Dr. Mark X. Pirazzini will officiate. Burial will immediately follow services in Rest Haven Cemetery in the Town of Washington. Friends may call at Fuller Speckien Hulke Funeral Home on Wednesday evening August 13, 2008 from 4-8 pm and at the church Thursday morning from 9:30 am until the time of services.

Walter was born in Milwaukee, WI on September 18, 1916 to Alfred and Goldine
(Friedberg) Gold. He grew up in Milwaukee and moved to Philadelphia with his family where he graduated from Cheltenham High School. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison before serving in Aruba and later as a Captain in the 10th Air Force Division in the CBI Theater in Burma. |
Walter met Gloria Wellhouse Meyer, the love of his life in Tampa, FL while stationed at Drew Field. They were married in Shelbyville, KY on September 21, 1944. Gloria and Walter moved to Eau Claire in January of 1946 when Walter was honorably discharged after the war. He went to work in the family owned Sterling Pulp & Paper Company in sales and later assumed the role of President of the company. He worked at Sterling Pulp & Paper for 30 years before selling it to the Brown Company, a division of Gulf & Western Company.
Walter was strongly committed to community service. He served at various times with several local organizations which included: Luther Hospital Board, Y.M.C.A Board, Board of Directors for First Wisconsin Bank, President of Eau Claire Golf and Country Club, and the Community Chest. Walter supported many conservation and environmental causes and educational and medical institutions throughout the country. He was a member of the Masons and the
Shriners. |

Walter had a rich wonderful life full of passions and hobbies. He spent years devoted to becoming a Master Bridge player and successfully played in many tournaments. He loved the challenges of golf and tennis with his friends in Wisconsin and Arizona. Gloria and Walter traveled extensively to every corner of the world. One of Walter's favorite trips was to Africa on picture taking safaris. He loved seeing the big game animals free in their native environments.
For the past 28 years, Walter and his family have cherished the traditional family Christmas holiday vacation. This special time created memories of a lifetime for all.
Walter will remain in the hearts of his loving family: his wife Gloria, daughters Elizabeth (Bill) Rahr and Mary Pat (Peter) Judkins. Grandchildren Matthew Rahr, Sarah and Jeffrey Judkins and his faithful dogs Sunny and Brandy. He is also remembered by numerous relatives and lifelong friends. His parents and his sister Margie Brachman precede him in death.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Walter's name to the Humane Society's of Eau Claire or Hayward or to the Northwest Wisconsin Homecare and Hospice.
