Bert and Viola were wonderful grandparents for a kid to have. Even as a grown man I and the other grand kids were still addressed as "Hey Kiddo"... They used to live in the wilderness of Happy Hill outside of Baraboo WI. I remember gathering in the living room of their country home in the early evening were my father (Steve) and Viola would, in good fun, passionately debate various topics (usually religion). Bert would sit quietly in his rocking chair.. legs crossed, eyes closed with his head supported by his hand. Just when you thought he has fast asleep he would open his eyes and offer his two cents to their ongoing debate. Usually derailing whatever point Steve was attempting to make. There was a place in their woods we referred to as "The Point". This place was set up like a small campground just for family. Every visit would eventually end up down at the point. There we would have a bonfire well into the night before hiking back to the house in the darkness. Much laughter and many stories were shared around these bonfires. I consider myself to have been extremely lucky to have had grandparents like Bert and Viola. We all wish to keep the ones we love around us forever but as I write this, I am happy to know Bert and Viola are together again. I also know that some day I will again here the words.. "Hey Kiddo"...

I will miss Bert very much! Bert & Viola were VERY special people. I really enjoyed talking with both of them. I will miss his smile and his joking way. Sorry I couldn't be there in person, my grandfather is also not in good health so I'm going to see him in Siren, WI Just wanted to let you know my thoughts and prayers are with you.
