William (Bill) Barnes died Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Sacred Heart Hospital of cancer.
 


   He was born in Rib Lake, WI on June 4, 1937, to William A. and Hermina Barnes. He graduated from Rib Lake High School in 1955
 
Bill served in the military from 1955 to 1958 as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division in North Carolina and as Chief of Message Center in a Nike Missile Battalion in Germany.
 
He married Helen Thieme in 1959. They had two children, Bill Jr. and Susan.
 
Bill graduated with a B.S. in Biology, Broadfield Science and Secondary Education from UW-Stevens Point in 1964. He taught science courses at Lodi High School from 1964 to 1968. Bill obtained an MS in Botany / Zoology in 1968 and a Ph.D. in Botany (Plant Ecology) from UW-Madison in 1972. He then taught Plant Ecology, Ecology, and Botany at UW-Eau Claire from 1972 until his retirement in 1999. During this time he authored 12 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles principally on floodplain forest dynamics.
   

Bill was a naturalist, cross-country skier and canoeist. He participated in many canoe races both local, nation-wide and in Canada. He and Helen won a National Championship for their age group in Pennsylvania in 1992. He spent many hours on the river training with partners, fishing with friends and paddling with family. He was an avid hunter, skier and skied the Birkebeiner 10 times. He also enjoyed travel and nature photography.
 
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, wife Helen, sister Ruth, and brother Dennis. He is survived by his son Bill and his wife Cherise and their daughters and son, Rachel, Claire, and Nate residing in Lakeville, MN his daughter Susan Riederer and her husband Jerry and their daughter Maggie, residing in Amherst WI, brother David and his wife Bonnie, special friend Eileen Cvancara, and many other relatives and good friends.

In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin or to the charity of the donor's choice.
 
After cremation, A celebration of Bill's life will take place at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Sunday January 10, 2010 at the Westgate Sportsman Club located at 4909 Sportsman Drive, Eau Claire, WI 54703 with a light lunch to follow.
