Norman Hewitt Crowe, age 90, of 816 Porter Ave, Eau Claire passed away on Sunday, May 24th, 2009 amongst his friends and family at the Syverson Lutheran Home.

Norm was born January 6, 1919 in the town of Clear Creek, Village of Allen, Eau Claire County to Frank and Iva (Hewitt) Crowe. He moved to Eau Claire at age 8 and lived his entire life in the city, graduating from the Senior High School in 1938.

Norman served in the US Army from 1941 to 1945 with 2 ½ years in England during the invasion of the European Theater. He was honorably discharged on December 1st, 1945.

After the service, he married LaVina Helen Marten, his high school sweetheart. They had two daughters, Julie and Lorie.

LaVina passed away in 1967 and Norm remarried Margaret (Hanson) Brouillette. They continued to reside in Eau Claire, both at 3305 Halsey St and then at 2513 John St. Margaret passed away in the fall of 2002.

Norm entered the insurance business in 1952 with the Gibson Wright Agency. In 1981 he sold his interest and merged with the Jackson Agency. He "retired" several times, but continued to be a regular face in the Jackson office until shortly after they merged with American Insurance Services in 2005.

Norm was an active member in the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Singing in America for over 50 years, both as a member of the Eau Claire chorus and a member of the Duffers Quartet for 23 years. He also sang in the St. John's church choir and the Polka Mass Ecumenical church group formed by Ed Lassek. Norm continued to be a Barbershop fan while residing at Syverson Nursing Home through the wonders of YouTube. Norm was a member of the Masonic Lodge 347, Consistory, Shrine Club and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 305. He really, really loved golfing with his regular Tuesday gang and his camping buddies at Chetek. Norm was treated to several outings to local golf courses all during his residence at Syverson. He also enjoyed camping and took several trips over the years to various parts of the nation. He and Margaret finally parked their camper at Six Lakes in Chetek, where they spent many happy summers.

Norm moved to the Syverson Lutheran Home in early 2006 and quickly became an active resident. His many years in the insurance business made him naturally social and he was often known to greet new residents to Syverson with "Don't I know you?". He happily participated in any and all activities and made many new, life-long friends amongst the staff and residents.

Norm is survived by daughters Julie (Gordon) Smith of Eau Claire, Lorie (Alvin) Burrows of Maple Grove, granddaughter Celena (Jeff) Smith-Reuter, grandson Cody Burrows, and great-granddaughter Reese Reuter, granddaughter Sandra (Tim) Petersen, great granddaughter Tara and great great granddaughter Harper, all of Baraboo, WI; grandson Rick Smith and great grandson Joshua, of Independence, MO; granddaughter Lisa (Aaron) Schilling and great granddaughter, Lauryn of Rochester, MN. He is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews. In addition, throughout his life Norm researched his family tree and built relationships with many relatives all over the world, including England and Canada. Norm was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Iva Crowe, brothers Elwin (Al), and Donovan, sister Agatha (Ernest) Deinhammer, and both spouses, LaVina and Margaret.
