Dean H. Detrick, 46, of Eau Claire and Grand Marais, MN, passed away Sunday morning, September 27, 2009, at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN, surrounded by his family. He was recently diagnosed with TTP, a rare blood disorder, and was receiving treatments at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Dean was born in London, England, on August 8, 1963. He lived for short periods of time in Kassel, Germany, San Bernadino, CA, Washington DC, and Duluth, MN, before his family settled in Grand Marais, MN in 1976. He graduated from Cook County High School in 1981, where he played football and boxed. He worked for the Cook County Highway Department before joining the family business, Detrick Hansen Realty, in Grand Marais, in 1983. His father was his mentor and taught him everything about the real estate business.

In 1986, he met Amy Serum and they were married on October 8, 1988, in Eau Claire. They had two sons together, Joseph and Jackson, who were an endless supply of pride and love and fun for them. Dean continued his career in sales in Eau Claire for a few years, then rejoined the family business in Grand Marais in 1998. He took great pride in “selling people their dreams on the North Shore”. Many of his clients became lifelong friends. He was currently Broker and Sales Manager of Coldwell Banker North Shore.

Dean enjoyed camping, hunting, cooking, blueberry picking, attending Country Jam and his dogs Linsey and Isabelle. He loved fishing and was an avid Minnesota Viking and Memorial Old Abe football fan. What brought Dean the most joy was just being a dad. His greatest joy was watching his boys play football. He was dearly loved by his family and friends. We will miss his laughter, teasing, humor, and stories. Everyone who met Dean has a story to tell.

Dean is survived by his wife, Amy, their sons, Joseph and Jackson, his mother, Lucie, of Grand Marais, his sister, Virginia (Richard) Palmer of Grand Marais, and their children, Lexie and Carrie, his mother-in-law, Mary Serum of Durand, his brother–in-law Michael (Julie) Serum, of Eau Claire, and their children Carl, Eric, and Addy, and his sister-in-law Kathy (Steve) Van Boxtel, DePere WI, and their children Ben (Althea), Sarah, and Kate. He is further survived by several uncles, aunts, and cousins, including many in Germany, and a legion of friends.
