Doris Adelia (Butcher) Ensign, 87, of Eau Claire, WI, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 28th at Luther Midelfort Hospital.
Doris was born to Isaiah and Hazel Butcher on November 14th, 1921 on a Vernon county farm near Hillsboro, Wisconsin. A few years later, Isaiah was called to the ministry, and the family left the farm. Doris grew up in several different Weslyan parsonages in north-central Wisconsin, and graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1939. She attended Marion College in Marion, Indiana for one year, and then returned to Wisconsin to receive her teaching certificate from Barron County Normal School in Rice Lake. She taught rural grade school in the Spooner area for five and a half years. Her teaching career was put on hold when she married Arlan Ensign of Spooner, WI on June 3rd, 1947. In 1954, they moved to Eau Claire, where she lived for the rest of her life as a devoted wife, and a loving mother to her four children. |

Doris was widely known as an excellent cook, and often sought after for her cake decorating skills. She was an avid game player, and loved playing games with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed needlework, including crochet and embroidery, and was an accomplished seamstress. When her children were all in school, she returned to teaching as a substitute in the Eau Claire school system. She was active in the Eau Claire Weslyan church for many years. Her beautiful soprano voice was featured in the church choir and she delighted the congregation with many Sunday morning special solos.
