After leaving high school, Gordie became a US Marine on Nov 6, 1953 and served his country in Korea, Okinawa and Japan, and was honorably discharged 3 years later. Gordie met and married his best friend and sweetheart, Patricia Ann (Ford) Mattoon in Baldwinsville, New York on Aug 2, 1958. Together they had five children; Jenny (passed away in infancy), Matt (Pam), Jennifer (Timn) Anderson, Daniel (Lisa), and Midge (Wendell) Noble -- and twelve grandchildren; Jessica (Andrew) Lehmkuhl, Ben, Chase, Emily, Brittany, Connor, Natasha, Nicholas, Colin, Nathan, Natalia, Eilis and one great granddaughter, Emerson.

Gordie spent most of his life in Eau Claire, WI in what he considered the finest community in the country. In addition to dairy farming for ten years, he worked as Building and Grounds Superintendent for several years each at; Eau Claire School District, various area school districts, Chippewa Valley Technical College (formerly District 1), and retired from Elmbrook School District in Brookfield WI in 1992.

He often described his life as "extremely rich". He satisfied his days with his skill at working with his hands, and nurturing his gardens, caring for others in need and love of all things Packer. His greatest joy came from God's hope within him and his greatest desire to be with his Christ was fulfilled when he was called home on Nov 21, 2009.

Gordie and his family wish to thank the many friends who have supported them during his illness, and most particularly wish to thank the St. Joseph Hospice team who so graciously served him throughout the past few months. People who may wish to honor the spirit of Gordie's generosity may contribute to the Disabled American Veterans, the Lymphoma Research Foundation or the Warming Center at Valleybrook in Eau Claire, WI.
