Born on July 8, 1911 to Martin and Olga (Sneen) Olson, Marcella was the third of eight children. She married Dr. Jan H. Paul on October 17th 1934 in Iowa, where he was in medical school. After he finished his residency at Boston General, Jan and Marcella returned to Eau Claire, where they raised their family. For many years after their retirement, Jan and Marcella spent winters in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed biking, walking, and spending time with old and new friends.

Marcella lived a life filled with family, friends, and faith. She was a talented and creative seamstress as well as a gifted knitter; she made countless beautiful sweaters for generations of children in the family.

Mom was also a terrific baker who was justly famous for her pies, and who always had lemon bars or date bars ready for visitors. She was an excellent golfer who played well into her eighties, and was proud to have once shot a hole-in-one.

Our mother was a devoted, life-long member of Christ Church Cathedral, where she served on the Altar Guild for many years.

Marcella’s warmth, good humor, and endless optimism drew people of all ages to her. She was much loved by many.

Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, Jan, in 2001, her seven brothers and sisters, and many other relatives and friends. She is survived by her two children, Jon (Denise) of Eau Claire, whose loving care made it possible for her to live in her own home, and Marcie (Steve Kaplan) of Green Bay, and her four beloved grandchildren: Lynsie E. Paul of Anchorage, Alaska; Daniel J. Kaplan (Mary Liedl) of Chicago, IL; Benjamin A. Kaplan of Minneapolis, MN; and Stephanie J. Kaplan of Green Bay, WI. She is further survived by a very special niece, Ann Nelson, and Ann's husband, Steve.

Among the many wonderful friends and relatives who added richness and enjoyment to Marcella's last few years are nieces Susan Taney and Janice Skauge (Marcella's goddaughter), nephew Jay Luttrell, and special friends Jany Chumas, Connie Chumas, Andra Chumas, and Matt Kaiser. Mom so enjoyed your visits and phone calls, the May baskets, the trips to the apple orchard, the card games, the stories you shared, and the cards and pictures you sent.

She cherished all of you.
