Lester William Schierenbeck entered the Church Triumphant and the arms of his Savior at Syverson Lutheran Home on Monday, April 27, 2009. He lived to the Lord and he died to the Lord. He is the Lord's! (Romans 14:7-9)

He was born on June 17, 1917 in New Ulm, MN to Pastor Reinhard and Irma (Blauert) Schierenbeck. He was baptized into the family of the Triune God in New Ulm, MN and confirmed those baptismal vows on April 10, 1930. He spent his childhood in Renville and Sanborn, MN. He attended high school and college at Concordia in St. Paul, MN while living with his paternal grandparents.

He graduated from Northwestern College in Watertown, WI in 1938 and from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Thiensville, WI in 1941. He served as interim pastor in St. Paul's Lutheran in Austin, MN during the summer of 1941. He was ordained and installed at St. John's of Darfur, MN and St. Matthew's of Butterfield, MN in September of 1941, where his public ministry and proclamation of the Gospel of Christ began and would last 50 years.

He was married to Agnes Strege of Watertown, SD on June 4, 1942. His service to the Lord continued as he served as pastor at St. Paul's of Austin (1944-1969), and Messiah Lutheran in Eau Claire, WI (1969-1982), and as professor at Immanuel Lutheran College and Seminary (1982-1991). His retirement years included service as assistant to the pastor at Messiah Lutheran (1991-1995).

After leaving the Wisconsin Synod for doctrinal reasons and joining the Church of the Lutheran Confession (CLC), he served his church body at various times from 1960-1990 on the Mission Board, the Board of Trustees, the Board of Education, and the Board of Doctrine.

The Lord blessed Lester and Agnes with four children: Pastor John (Sharon) Schierenbeck, Winter Haven, FL, Pastor David (Mary) Schierenbeck, Inver Grove Heights, MN, Barbara (Prof. John) Pfeiffer, Eau Claire, WI, and Mary Beth Schierenbeck, Eau Claire, WI.

In addition to his children, he is survived by 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren (plus 3 awaiting birth), one sister-in-law, Ruth Siegel of Tuscon, AZ), nieces, nephews, and many dear friends from his ministry and from his daily contacts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Agnes, three brothers, one sister, and two brothers-in-law.

After a lifetime filled with the blessings of good health, he faced a variety of physical challenges during the past two-and-a-half years. Yet over and over again, the Lord restored his health through rehab in a nursing home, so he could return to his home with Mary Beth, until his greatest wish came true and he entered his permanent Heavenly Home this week. His testimony of his sure and certain faith in Christ His Savior continued to be spread to those who surrounded him. The family wishes to thank Pastors Gullerud and Tiefel for their faithful spiritual care and Dr, Mark Edstrom for his kind and respectful expertise in the challenging physical care over these past years. Special thanks also go Natalie Endl for her assistance in the apartment, our "oxygen lady" from Walgreen's Home Care, Gail Martin, and the rehab therapists, nursing staff and social services team at Syverson Lutheran Home, as well as Admissions Director Heidi Reynolds who, over and over again, always found a place for "Lester"!

A Victory Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, WI, with Pastor Mark Gullerud and Pastor Paul Tiefel officiating. A private burial will be held preceding the service, with visitation at the church beginning at 3:00 p.m. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Immanuel Lutheran College Student Aid Fund (SAF).
