Dorin D. Shadick, 95, died May 23, 2009 shortly after sunrise at his home in Eau Claire. He was a kind and true 'Gentle-man'. His concern was for others before himself. All who knew him loved him and he will be sadly missed.

Dorin was the second son born to Henry "Butch" Shadick and Ota Mae Powell on May 21, l914 in the town of Ainsworth near Pearson, Wisconsin. He was one of six children. He graduated from Antigo High School in 1931. Dorin married Norma Juanita Combs on September 15, l940. He and Norma moved to Eau Claire in l947. Dorin resided in Eau Claire until the time of his death.

He is survived by son, Terry (Kathleen); 3 granddaughters, Stephanie (Christian), Erin and Katie; 2 'special' granddaughters Carolyn Tamke and Amy Linder; his youngest sister Betty and brother-in-law Howard; many nieces and nephews as well as countless other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Norma; his parents, Henry and Ota Mae Shadick; brothers, Eugene ("Doc") and George; sisters Carol and Marge; sister-in-laws, Elaine, Mildred and Thedora; as well as brother-in-laws Ed, Norbert and George.

Dorin worked hard all of his life; no job was too menial or insignificant. As a young man, his labors included working on the family farm, rowing fish boats for tourists, picking potatoes, dispatching and driving cabs as well as clerking for the WPA. He planted trees, hewed logs and drove truck for the CCC. Additionally, he piled and sawed lumber and managed a small sawmill as well as helped build the phone lines along the Alaskan highway.

In l945, at the age of 30, he volunteered for the draft serving in the Philippines and the Army of Occupation in Japan. He was honorably discharged in l946. In early 1947, Dorin and Norma moved to Eau Claire. Dorin worked for and then co-owned Cary Transfer with his brother-in-law George Scott. He became sole owner and operator of Cary Transfer in the early l950s until its' closure in June l997.

Following retirement at age 84, Dorin served as a volunteer for Luther Hospital's Step Force and actively participated in the cardiac rehabilitation program three times a week. Daily, if weather permitted, Dorin would visit the gravesite of Norma. He kept his lawn pristine and the pride of the neighborhood. He took pleasure in helping his neighbors with their yard duties and continued to shovel and snow blow until December 15, 2008.

He entered the Northwest Home Care and Hospice program on December 28, 2008. He was lovingly cared for at his home by son Terry until the time of his death.

His family would like to extend special thanks to Reverend Doctor Mark Pirazzini of First Congregational Church for your many years of spiritual guidance and numerous visits which brought prayer and laughter into Dorin's home and heart. The church and congregation were an important part of Dorin's life. Thank you to Mary Barns for making Dorin's final months warmer by your kind words, gentle touch, prayers, organ playing, flowers and smile as well as introducing Dorin to the Threshold Singers. Thank you to Northwest Home Care and Hospice for the special care and in particular to Linda for your hearty laugh, caring touch and stories of your son; to Natasha for your bright smile and the screams brought on by Dorin spraying you with the shower nozzle; to Kathy for your comforting prayers and "Lutheran" readings; and to Billy for your worry and constant checking, assuring that Dorin and Terry had everything that was needed.
In addition, thank you to Dr. Burns, Dr. Rentzepis, their staff members as well as all the doctors and nurses who have helped Dorin along the way. The professional care provided comfort and assured quality and fullness of life. And finally, a grateful thank you to all of the men and women who worked for and helped Cary Transfer be a successful business for so many years.

Visitation will be at Fuller-Speckien-Hulke Funeral Home, 3209 Rudolph Rd., Thursday, May 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at First Congregational Church on May 29 at 11 a.m. Friends and family may call one hour prior to services at church. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery, Town of Washington.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials be given to First Congregational Church or Northwest Wisconsin Home Care and Hospice. Fuller-Speckien-Hulke Funeral Home in Eau Claire is assisting the family with arrangements.
