Alice Elizabeth "Betty" Hartwell Held, age 93 born in Eau Claire, the daughter of Alice (Preston) and Eugene Hartwell died on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the Syverson Lutheran Home.
Betty graduated from Eau Claire Senior High in 1933 and from Eau Claire Teachers' College in 1937. After two years of teaching in Strum, WI, Betty married Virgil (Pat) Held on June 4, 1939. They lived in Withee where Pat taught and coached.
When Pat left for the War effort from 1943-1945, Betty moved back to Eau Claire and served as Director of the Eau Claire Red Cross. After the war they lived in Algoma where their daughter Linda was born. |

Later, Pat became a regional agent for Mutual Service and they lived in Excelsior, MN. After Betty's father became ill, they returned to Eau Claire and Betty worked for Pat's insurance agency.
Betty taught freshman English and later was the librarian for the Altoona School District until she retired in 1978.
After her retirement, Betty and Pat built a home on Mississippi River where they docked their pontoon. Family and friends have many fond memories of those pontoon "adventures". The Held's traveled often including trips to the west coast, the east coast, Canada, Mexico and Europe. In 1995, Betty and Pat returned to Eau Claire.
Betty enjoyed the company of family, friends, and their pet dogs. She also enjoyed reading, studying scripture, solving crossword puzzles, working on genealogy, reading books, playing cards, especially bridge. Throughout her life, Betty was active in community organizations in Eau Claire and Cochrane including: Daughters of the American Revolution, Retired Educators, VFW Auxiliary, and Republican Women. In Buffalo City, she attended Homemakers monthly. Pat and Betty were members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winona and Christ Church Cathedral in Eau Claire.
Survivors include Linda (Greg) Bauer of Eau Claire and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers: Vic, Bill, and Gene.
Memorial services will be held at 11 am on Friday May 28, 2010 at Christ Church Cathedral, 510 S. Farwell Street, Eau Claire, 54701. The Very Reverend Bruce Gardner will officiate. Memorial visitation will take place Thursday evening from 5-7 pm at Fuller Speckien Hulke Funeral Home, 3209 Rudolph Road, Eau Claire, WI 54701 and at the Church Friday morning from 10 am until the time of services. Committal services will take place prior to the memorial service on Friday morning May 28, 2010 at 9:30 am at Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Christ Church Cathedral and the American Red Cross, 3485 E. Hamilton Avenue, Eau Claire, WI 54701.
