A few years later, he was drafted into the Army. He served his country as an Instructor in the United States Military Academy at West Point. After being injured while saving the life of a young cadet during training exercises, he was honorably discharged and moved his young family back to Eau Claire. He started work at Peters' Meat Packing Company where he was promoted to Manager of the Processed Meats Division. He worked there for 30+ years until the company closed. He then worked at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the Recreation Center saying he finally made it to the top of the hill.

Gordon was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and ushered in the early service for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #53 from post war service to the present. Gordon loved his life in Eau Claire and was an avid golfer and was on many bowling teams. He was a sports enthusiast and especially loved family times together. Many summers were spent at a cottage in northern Wisconsin with other family members, fishing and boating and just being together.
