Gertrude Rose Korger, 94, a resident of Wissota Springs, Chippewa Falls, died Monday, November 9, 2009 at her residence.
She was born September 20, 1915 in Eau Claire, the daughter of Henry and Agatha (Rada) Korger.
She attended Notre Dame Grade School and graduated from McDonell Memorial High School and from Eau Claire Normal and the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire.
Gertrude was in the field of Elementary Education for 50 years, as a teacher in both the rural and the state grade schools for 8 years, as a teacher and principal at the former Southside School in Chippewa Falls for 10 years, and as a teacher and principal at Korger-Chestnut School for 32 years. Korger-Chestnut was named in her honor in January, 1978. Gertrude retired from the teaching profession in 1985.
Gertrude was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church and the Notre Dame P.C.C.W., an ambassador for the home Pilgrim Virgin statue of Our Lady of Fatima, a former member and director of the Latin Mass choir at St. Mary's Church in Altoona, a member of the Chippewa Valley Retired Educators Association, the Chippewa Valley Cultural Association and a life member of the Chippewa County Historical Society.
Gertrude is survived by: one brother, Henry (Betty) Korger, Jr. of Stevens Point; one sister-in-law, Lucille Korger of Chippewa Falls; 32 nieces and nephews; and many great great nieces and nephews.
Gertrude was preceded in death by: her parents; four sisters, twins, Mary and Martha Korger, Ida Mae Kressin and Winifred Harings; three brothers, Wilfred, Joseph and Norbert Korger; two nephews, Anthony Korger and Kenny Harings; three great nephews, Benjamin and Brian Korger and John Kressin; two sisters-in-law, Marge Korger and Virginia Korger; and two brothers-in-law, Maynard Kressin and Mathias Harings.
A Latin Requiem Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 13, 2009 at Notre Dame Church, Chippewa Falls. Rev. John Mary Gilbert will be celebrant of the Latin Requiem Mass. Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, town of Tilden.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 12 and until 10 a.m. Friday at the Horan Funeral Home, Chippewa Falls. The Ladies of Notre Dame will recite the rosary at 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
