Donald E. "Ez" Stumpf,
75, of 318 Wheaton St., Chippewa Falls, died Friday, November
13, 2009 at Wissota Health, Chippewa Falls, with St. Joseph's
Hospice.
He was born June 5, 1934 in Chippewa Falls, the son of Ezra
Frederick and Laurina (Weyenberg) Stumpf.
After having served his country at the 8th Army headquarters
in Japan during the Korean Crisis, he returned to Chippewa
Falls and resumed his education at UWEC earning his Bachelor
of Science degree in Chemistry in 1958. While attending
college, he was a linebacker for the 1956 Blugolds football
team, under Coach Ade Olson, who won the league championship.
Ez was a valuable member of the Chippewa Falls community both
on and off the athletic field. He made a difference through a
life full of service and his strong desire to make life better
for others.
Ez helped establish the Alumni Football Game between Chi-Hi and McDonell High School (proceeds of which were used to rebuild the Glen Loch Dam and purchase the electric football scoreboard). It was during this time, that he became one of the original five founders of ARDCO (Applied Research and Development Corp.) which later was acquired by Amoco Chemicals. After 17 years, he left Amoco to become co-owner of Kurth Sheet Metal for a time. In the spring of 2001, he retired as National Catalog Sales Manager of Spectrum Industries. |
Ez held various posts as President and/or Secretary in the Chippewa Falls fast pitch and softball leagues, the Ojibwa golf league, and the Elk's men's golf leagues.
Ez also served as Director on the McDonell High School Board, the Chippewa Foundation, the Chippewa Falls Elks, Chippewa Falls Rotary, the Chippewa Falls United Way, the Wisconsin State Jaycees and the Knights of Columbus Goldsmith Council #974.
His leadership and organizational qualities were further recognized through his Presidency of the Chippewa Falls Industrial Development Committee, the Chippewa Falls Library Board, the Chippewa Falls Jaycees and the St. Charles Parish School Board.
One of his most treasured activities was working the scoreboard at the old Fairgrounds and at Dorais Field for 39 consecutive seasons. He loved being part of the action and watching the young athletes develop through their high school years. In the 70's, he had the opportunity to watch his children perform on Dorais Field with the McDonell High School Marching Band, and in recent years, to watch his grandchildren perform with Chi-Hi Marching Cardinals.
His endless energy, enthusiasm, leadership and athletic skills were generously shared, making him an asset to his church and his community throughout his life. Ezs' dream job finally came to fruition when he worked at Wissota Golf.
Although he devoted countless hours to volunteering for many organizations and offices, he never lost sight of his love for his family. Ez was first and foremost a family man. He was a loving, caring husband, father and grandfather who continually gave of himself. His warmth, openness and sense of humor made it fun to be with him. He was genuinely interested in people and it showed.
He married Jacqueline Schmidt on October 8, 1960 at St. Charles Church, Chippewa Falls.
Ez is survived by: his wife, Jacqueline; three daughters, Karla (Steve) Fiedler of Chippewa Falls, Karen Rineck of Lino Lakes, Minn. and Kristine (Davey) Quinn of Camdenton, Miss.; one sister, Angeline Anderl of New Ulm, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, Shana and Stephanie Fiedler, Michelle Griggs, Megan, Michael, Molly, Andrew and Adam Rineck, Samantha, Davey, Jr., Kaylea and Sheri Quinn; and 6 great grandchildren, Autumn and Pierce Anderson, Gwen Griggs, Aiden Quinn and Adelyn and Brick Shaurette.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Frederick and Robert in infancy; and one brother-in-law, Arnold Anderl.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at St. Charles Church, Chippewa Falls. Rev. Albert Sonnberger will be celebrant of the funeral Mass. Burial of cremains will be in Hope Cemetery, Chippewa Falls at a later date.

Ez was grateful for the opportunities life gave him here in the Chippewa Valley. Relocating was never a real option for him. Although COPD limited his participation the past few years, his spirit never diminished. There was little breath these last few days, but there was a huge desire to enjoy what he was able to do to the fullest.
Breathe Ez Breathe
One Mo' time, Grandpa.
